A proverb goes that "prepare the child for the path, not the path for the child"
Our project goal was to build a 'Child Friendly Space' in a disaster-prone region. Every year, flash floods hit the upper section of Bangladesh. One of the areas are Tanguar Haor. Heavy rains trigger flash floods in this area generated from Meghalaya. So we selected Mondiyata village in Tahirpur, Sunamganj, as our project location. It was discovered throughout the survey that children here are more tolerant of floods. Along with their elementary schooling, poverty forces children into numerous economic activities. In spite of the economic situation, they continue to learn. It brings them delight to go fishing, play, and socialize with their buddies all across the Haor. Local people raise their children alongside their cattle, so children grow a great attachment with the cattles from the very early age. It stretches from the house's courtyard to the Hoar. But even a flash flood can't dampen their spirits. Some space for these activity during flood is all they need.
What is a child Friendly space? Should it be a playground or a school in such disaster prone area? In this standard, 'child-friendly spaces' (CFS) are defined as safe areas where children may engage in free and organized playing as well as recreational and educational activities, such as those related to cleanliness and safety, as well as protecting themselves from danger. It is believed that CFS refers to a philosophy or set of ideas. Providing just a small amount of space may not be enough. Children will be isolated from child-friendly locations due to the ongoing struggle against floods and economic instability.
Then we thought, why not make their existing relationship with nature a child friendly one? A child-friendly area in Sunamganj will provide activities such as connectivity, finance, and survival for children. Water hyacinth can live anywhare. so we have focused on a transitional place between the linear settlement and school. Where children may learn and play together in a safe environment. A shepherd boy can care for his cattle while learning important life lessons. Everything is designed to encourage parents to send their kids to these Child Friendly areas. Besides academics and technical skills, children will learn about money management from this source. These locations will remain active throughout the year thanks to their amphibious structure. Our CFS can survive like water hyacinth. It is economically sustainable and a suitable place for children.
